About Schlei Natural Park

Schlei Natural Park, located in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein, encompasses the scenic Schlei fjord, surrounding wetlands, forests, and agricultural landscapes. This natural park protects a 230-square-kilometer region centered on the Schlei inlet, a brackish water fjord extending approximately 42 kilometers inland from the Baltic Sea. The park is characterized by a mosaic of habitats, including shallow bays, reed beds, tidal flats, mixed deciduous forests, and small hills that deliver a mild microclimate. Historically, the Schlei region is culturally significant for the ancient Viking settlement of Haithabu (Hedeby), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nearby. Visitors to Schlei Natural Park can explore a variety of well-marked hiking and cycling routes that offer glimpses of traditional rural villages, birdwatching areas, and panoramic views of the fjord’s beautiful coastline. Birdlife is abundant, especially migratory waterfowl and rare species in the extensive wetland zones. The park’s natural beauty and cultural richness attract nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and outdoor adventurers seeking year-round recreational opportunities including hiking, cycling, kayaking, and sailing. Several visitor centers provide educational exhibits about local ecology and heritage. With its peaceful landscapes and blend of natural and historic attractions, Schlei Natural Park appeals as a tranquil yet enriching destination on Germany’s Baltic coast.
